We plan on using our current enterprise application, which is using 10.2.0.5.0 on the backend, until the end of 2012. Then we're going to switch over to a whole new system.

Our vendor is telling us that Oracle will stop issuing security patches and bug fixes for Oracle 10g at the end of 2011. Should we upgrade to 11g?

If we do not upgrade to 11g, then we would be on 10g for about one year without these security patches and bug fixes. Should this be a concern?

If present security & functionality are now acceptable to you, then they would be OK 10 years from now.
Realize that some folks are still running V8 Oracle in production now.

This is like rolling the dice as you never know what you will get. If your application is pretty much static and bug free stay.... Having said that, if a change is made which crahses your DB and it not ported to 10G, you loose.

Since 12C is due out very soon, 11G has been out for
a while and 10G is very old I would give this much thought.

As a general guideline in our company, we keep the Application / OS / Oracle updates "in synch"

Especially in the days of virtual machines, it makes sense for us to go upgrade the actual OS and Oracle version the moment we upgrade the application, by installing a completely new machine. Which happens about every 3-4 years. Although for our main applications before that the Application / OS / Oracle update was most of the time also in synch with the hardware upgrade.
