we want to change the instance name to something like db-prod.
My question is is it possible to use "-" in an instance name?

Why don't you try it?
Anyway, even if it would be possible you should not do it because "-" is a special character and I bet Oracle did not test it is harmless in ALL cases (if, of course, it is possible).

what does it mean to subtract sting "prod" from string "db"?
The "-" character is the MINUS operator.

its not the issue to substract anything. we have to build a new oracle environment and the current database are named like dbprod ect. those names are well chosen for our environment and we like to change them as little ass possible. thats why we thought that maybe this was a solution.

You can change it as you want but just use alphanumeric characters.
