Oracle initialisation error (merged) [message #465660]

I am using oracle 9i version. My problem is oracle window opens.But i can not login by typing the user name and password.
while login an error is displayed as follows.
ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress.
Please anybody help me in rectifying the problem.

ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress 
Cause: An attempt was made to log on while Oracle is being started up or shutdown.
 
Action: Wait a few minutes. Then retry the operation.

And check in alert.log if the last startup completed correctly.

You tried what? to check in alert.log? The solution is in it, so post it here URGENTLY.

I suggest you look at the alert log and if it's so urgent, log a TAR with Oracle support.
