All,

haven't used any Oracle Database yet. We have no DBA, but I have to move Oracle 10 R2 XE on Windows 2003 SP2 to a new virtual machine. Given that I have no experience with Oracle I would just image the system partition and copy the data partition to the new machine. Windows is shutdown of course. Database is << 1 GB. Downtime shouldn't be a problem. That is I keep the existing directory structure and everything, except the hardware. Will there be any issues?

Just for curiosity: Is there a step by step manual howto re-install and import dumps created with expdp.exe?

Thank you. I'll have a look at the manuals, but it's too complicated at first glance for a beginner.

Thus: is there anything against my described "imaging" approach?

I know nothing about virtualization so can't help you on this point.
What I know is that Oracle put information in several places when installing itself: its home directory (you gave it), %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files, registry...

You didn't say what VM environment you are moving to, but if you follow whatever its method is for converting a physical machine to a VM I would think that the software installation and the database will survive. You may have an issue with networking if IP addresses change, the database listener might need reconfiguration.

Thank you! I will try that and report if it worked. Fortunately, I don't have to change anything on the existing machine so I could go back in worst-case.

Excellent. Good job. I have many years of Oracle experience, yet moving a database from one machine to another is not something I would want to do.
